MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: AIDS
At the present time, there is no cure for AIDS. It is always fatal if no treatment is provided. In the U.S., most patients survive many years following diagnosis because of the availability of HAART. HAART has dramatically increased the time from diagnosis to death, and research continues in the areas of drug treatments and vaccine development. Unfortunately, HIV medications are not always available in the developing world, where the bulk of the epidemic is raging, due to socioeconomic reasons.

President's HIV/AIDS Initiatives
On November 30, 2007, President and Mrs. Bush marked World AIDS Day 2007 by participating in a faith-based roundtable discussion at Calvary United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, Maryland. This World AIDS Day, the U.S. Government is highlighting the important role of faith- and community-based organizations in the global fight against HIV/ AIDS. The President and Mrs. Bush will discuss the global response to HIV/ AIDS with U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Mark Dybul, members of local churches involved with volunteer efforts in AIDS-afflicted countries, and faith-based organizations partnering with the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Starting today, the White House will display the red ribbon for two days on the North Portico to represent the continued battle against HIV/ AIDS and to affirm the matchless value of every life.

MedlinePlus: AIDS
A blood test can tell if you have HIV infection. Your health care provider can perform the test, or call the National AIDS hotline for a referral at (800) 342-AIDS (1-800-342-2437). There is no cure, but there are many medicines to fight both HIV infection and the infections and cancers that come with it. People can live with the disease for many years.

HIV Infection and AIDS: An Overview, NIAID Fact Sheet
Since 1981, more than 980,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the United States to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) . According to CDC, more than 1,000,000 Americans may be infected with HIV, one-quarter of whom are unaware of their infection. The epidemic is growing most rapidly among minority populations and is a leading killer of African-American males ages 25 to 44. According, AIDS affects nearly seven times more African Americans and three times more Hispanics than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African-American women and children are being affected by HIV/ AIDS.

World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR)
The Office of AIDS Research coordinates the scientific, budgetary, legislative, and policy elements of the NIH AIDS research program. Through its annual comprehensive trans-NIH planning, budgeting, and portfolio assessment processes, OAR sets scientific priorities, enhances collaboration, and ensures that research dollars are invested in the highest priority areas of scientific opportunity that will lead to new tools in the global fight against AIDS.

Hearing Aids [NIDCD Health Information]
Another promising research focus is to use lessons learned from animal models to design better microphones for hearing AIDS. NIDCD-supported scientists are studying the tiny fly Ormia ochracea because its ear structure allows the fly to determine the source of a sound easily. Scientists are using the fly s ear structure as a model for designing miniature directional microphones for hearing AIDS. These microphones amplify the sound coming from a particular direction (usually the direction a person is facing), but not the sounds that arrive from other directions. Directional microphones hold great promise for making it easier for people to hear a single conversation, even when surrounded by other noises and voices.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Days
Throughout the year, health departments, community-based organizations, faith organizations, and other groups and individuals participate in annual national and global awareness days to address the HIV/ AIDS pandemic. We hope the information on this website will help you to educate, motivate, and mobilize your local community in the fight against HIV/ AIDS!
